To Eat or Not to Eat

That is the question

Oooooo-MAH-me! Doesn’t this look like a scrumptious black morel hiding out behind a clump of grass? We weren’t searching for the elusive delicacy – we were just walking and we saw it. And then, of course, we saw more. And then more. I wondered if we had hit the motherlode. Mysterious, wild and obscure, black morels are the rock stars of mushrooms and are hard to find unless you have some inside knowledge.

“Every bite of a meal with morels is the best bite.”

It looked right—pointy top, honeycombed cap with black to brownish ridges and completely hollow inside. Even so, I once went mushrooming with an expert mycologist who said over and over again, “Never eat a wild mushroom unless you have verified it with three knowledgeable sources.” So I sent a quick photo to a knowledgeable source who immediately texted back “inedible”.

So we left them right where they were. I wonder if we missed that earthy, nutty, woodsy and toasted nummy umami flavor that only black morels deliver.
