Brrrrrrrrrrrrrry brisk.
The temperature is brisk and so is my walk today. And short. It’s thirteen below zero, and although the sun is smiling, it’s a bit chilly to linger long. Nonetheless, others have also passed this way today—there are fresh footprints on the high path where I’m walking, and snowmobile tracks down below on the horse trail.
What catches my eye is the glistening highlight on the sun side of every stalk in this stand of sumac. Even in this arctic temperature, the sun has warmed a thin sliver of the ice clinging to the fuzzy branches just enough to coax out a shimmer.
"To appreciate the beauty of a snowflake it is necessary to stand out in the cold.”
Aristotle
Even though I’m cold-weather layered, hatted, mittened, and triple socked, I don’t last long on the trail, but this brief glimpse of ordinary sumac all decked out with tiny strips of bling-bling makes for a happy day.
