It was late afternoon and the sun poked its head out from behind a cloud just in time to smile on this patch of hazelnut bushes along the path. With the bright illumination the dangly yellow catkins waved at me boldly, but only by getting up really, really close could I see the tiny starburst-shaped magenta flowers starting to form at the tip of the branches.
"Even an ordinary broken chord is made to disclose rare beauties; we are reminded of the fairies' hazelnuts in which diamonds were concealed but you could break the shell only if your hands were blessed."
Neville Cardus
These unassuming bushes will actually produce small hazelnuts – not the kind you get in a martini or that flavor a wicked Frangelico – but the kind that will delight squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits and foxes this coming autumn.
