Optimism and Patience

A happy little face appears beside the path.

Overnight and without a bit of fanfare this neat little flower decided to poke its head out of the underbrush and take a look around. It wasn’t here yesterday. A friend, much more plant-knowledgeable than I, identified it as a Wood Anemone.

“I dream of a quiet man who explains nothing and defends nothing, but only knows where the rarest wildflowers are blooming, and who goes, and finds that he is smiling not by his own will.”

Wendell Barry

Swaying in its own ocean of the early woodland floor this happy bloom is a sure sign of spring. Apparently unaware—or more likely, uncaring—about the forecast of snow tomorrow, the wood anemone has waited almost five years to bloom, so she lets go with all of her tiny might. Spreading her petals out wide in all directions she looks up at me with a big smile as I walk past, and I smile back.
