Hi Honey!

What’s for Dinner?

Tonight it looks like big legfulls of prunus padis pollen. Yummy! The Mayday tree (or bird cherry or hackberry) opened up with an overwhelming nosefull of exquisite botanical perfume that attracted me—and the bees. This branch was vibrating with bee activity and I was lucky enough to catch one in the act of filling his baskets!

Three days not having looked at the world, and lo, it is full of cherry blossoms.”

Japanese proverb

Later this summer the clusters of black berries will provide a buffet on a branch for songbirds of all kinds. Although astringently bitter to human taste buds, Mayday berries have been used in folk remedies since the Middle Ages and scientists are studying them today because of their antioxidative potential. But the fragrance, oh the fragrance, is curative all by itself!
