So early in the season this extravagant spray of cherry blossoms caught me by surprise! With the beaver pond behind it still crackling under layers of ice, this cherry tree decided it was time for a declaration of spring.
Prunus avium, also known as Wild cherry, Bird cherry, Bing cherry, Gean, Crab cherry, Mazzard, and Sweet cherry shows up trailside, showy white blossoms dancing audaciously among the bare branches, oblivious of the threat of frost. Something to emulate, perhaps.
"If there were no cherry blossoms in this world how much more tranquil our hearts would be in spring."
Ariwara no Narihita
Blossom watching, known as hanami, is the Japanese custom of enjoying the transient beauty of the cherry blossoms while picnicking underneath cherry boughs and sipping saké. Something else to emulate, perhaps.
