A Black Berry

Not a blackberry.

When there’s not much color in the woods yet, these violet red canes flush confidently in the dull landscape. In a few months these will yield plump, tasty black raspberries. Rubus occidentalis, in the rose family, is a native, self-pollinating shrub that brambles along roadsides and hiking trails.

Black raspberries are sweeter and juicier than blackberries, and hollow like a raspberry. They are way ahead of the berry pack in possessing superior anti-aging and disease-prevention properties. They contain an impressive amount of anthocyanins which are linked to healthier blood vessels and thought to protect cells from mutating and becoming cancerous.

"Wild berries the secret of healing on the tip of my tongue.”

Hifsa Ashraf

Going black cap picking is a favorite summer pastime, but the timing can be tricky. Too soon and the fruit will be bitterly tart. Too late and the purplish black drupelets will have been gobbled up by the birds.
